In some cultures long hair is seen as a symbol of fertility, desirability, identity or good health or status. So, the inferences being that without hair women are no longer sexy, attractive or aesthetically pleasing. The shaving of one's hair is also seen as a sign of penitence, renunciation or piety as opposed to a mark of vanity. Historically a shaven head has always had meaning - and in a woman's case, mostly negative. Men of war would often cut a lock of hair to give to their loved ones. The significance being that their silky locks left a positive, romantic impression in their absence.Synthetic wigs have come a long way in recent years and are not the artificial "wiggy" looking things they once were. Good quality synthetic wigs are now available which look very natural and real. If properly fitted close to the head it is hard to tell that they are not real. Lower priced items however which stand away from the head look unnatural and are easily spotted. If you want to go synthetic it is best to go for quality which will still cost only a fraction of the price of real hair.
