The medical fraternity has different names for different types of hair-growth problems and baldness. Some of them are - loss of hair for any reason is generally indicated as alopecia; sudden loss of hair due to some disease causing antibodies, to work against hair follicles is named alopecia areata, and if there no hair at all on the scalp, it is called alopecia totalis; deficiency of amino acids can cause hair-loss; the growing phase of hair between one and seven years of human beings is identified as anagen; loss of hair in that period as also loss of hair due to radiation or chemotherapy treatment for cancer is named as anagen effluvium, and baldness caused due to hereditary reasons is known as androgenetic alopecia (both male-pattern baldness and female-pattern baldness).It has been stated in history books that the ancient Egyptians wore wigs to shield their hairless heads from the sun, and also to protect their hair from the bleaching effects of the sun. They used beeswax and resin to keep their wigs in place. Wigs were also used as an everyday fashion in other ancient cultures including the Asyrians, Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans. For the Romans, in particular, wigs were often made with hair from slaves.
