A strip of hair in the correct size is surgically removed, with the follicles, and surgeons stitch closed the area where the hair was removed. Preparing the Hair Grafts The donor strip of hair is divided carefully into tiny hair grafts. Generally speaking, hair replacement systems use grafts of approximately 1 to 3 hairs and follicles toward the front of the hairline, then larger grafts as they move back. Surgery Once the grafts are formed, the surgeon performs the grafting procedure. It is usually completed on an outpatient basis, with a local anesthetic to deaden the pain.
